Hosea 11

God Yearns over His People

1 When Israel was a youth I loved him,
And ^aout of Egypt I ^bcalled My son.
2 The more ^{▼▼ I.e. God’s prophets
,} ^dthey called them,
The more they went from ^{▼▼ I.e. God’s prophets}them;
They kept ^fsacrificing to the Baals
And ^gburning incense to idols.
3 Yet it is I who taught Ephraim to walk,
^{▼▼ So ancient versions; Heb He...His}I ⁱtook them in My arms;
But they did not know that I ^jhealed them.
4 I ^kled them with cords of a man, with bonds of love,
And ^lI became to them as one who lifts the yoke from their jaws;
And I bent down and ^mfed them.

5 ^{▼▼ Lit He}They will not return to the land of Egypt;
But Assyria— he will be ^{▼▼ Lit his}their king
Because they ^prefused to return to Me.
6 The ^qsword will whirl against ^{▼▼ Lit his}their cities,
And will demolish ^{▼▼ Lit his}their gate bars
And ^tconsume them because of their ^ucounsels.
7 So My people are bent on ^vturning from Me.
Though ^{▼▼ I.e. God’s prophets}they call ^{▼▼ Lit him; i.e. Israel}them to the One on high,
None at all exalts Him.

8 ^yHow can I give you up, O Ephraim?
How can I surrender you, O Israel?
How can I ^{▼▼ Lit give}make you like ^aaAdmah?
How can I treat you like ^abZeboiim?
My heart is turned over within Me,
^{▼▼ Lit Together}All My compassions are kindled.
9 I will ^adnot execute My fierce anger;
I will not destroy Ephraim ^aeagain.
For ^afI am God and not man, the ^agHoly One in your midst,
And I will not come in ^{▼▼ Lit excitement}wrath.
10 They will ^aiwalk after the Lord,
He will ^ajroar like a lion;
Indeed He will roar
And His sons will come ^aktrembling from the west.
11 They will come trembling like birds from ^alEgypt
And like ^amdoves from the land of ^anAssyria;
And I will ^aosettle them in their houses, declares the Lord.

12 ^{▼▼ Ch 12:1 in Heb}Ephraim surrounds Me with ^aqlies
And the house of Israel with deceit;
Judah is also unruly against God,
Even against the Holy One who is faithful.
